A great, but lesser known musician is coming to town September 29th, at the Mesa Arts Center. Tickets are still available for this event for only twenty dollars a ticket. If you are not familiar with his music, Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver is a folk musician out of Wisconsin. His first album For Emma, Forever Ago reached as high as 64 on the US top 100 albums. In a world dominated by pop, and rap it is surprising a rootsy project like Bon Iver ever caught fire.
Bon Iver truly has a sound often not heard before. Bon Iver is a nod to the 60’s. If you are a fan of CSNY and early folk music, this guy is for you. Vernon produced the album himself and is a kind of bare bones effort into producing an album. You won’t find any loops, or overproduced guitars here. Vernon keeps it simple. Guitar and vocals with some light percussive elements make up the album. This approach can be especially dangerous without a big production value, but it pays huge dividends. The end result is a relaxing, yet emotional down to earth album.
On tracks like ” Skinny Love,” you see just how dangerous an acoustic guitar and emotion can be. He performed this track on the popular Jools and Holland a popular music show in the UK. Recently, he wrote a four track album called “Blood Bank,” which he will most likely play in its entirety at the Mesa Arts Center.
Bon Iver is a show for everyone of all ages. His music can be appreciated from the young to the old which is part of his broad appeal. If you can’t make it to U2 this year see Bon Iver.
Bon Iver will be worth every penny. Go to http://www.mesaartscenter.com/ to purchase your tickets now.
