Painting the exterior of your house can be a long, drawn out process involving weeks of work. Unfortunately, the result is always what you think it will be, thanks to certain common mistakes that can be easily prevented. This is a guide to some of the most common mistakes people make when painting the exterior of their homes.
Sure, anything that needs to be painted has to be prepared, but exterior preparation is doubly important. Not only should one clean the area, removing chipped paint, and dirt, and apply primer, but they must also check for mold and mildew, water damage, and weak wood. Your home has withstood the elements for years, so it’s impractical to believe that no damage has been done. Not only can improving the outer condition of your home cut down on your energy bill, but it will also ensure that you won’t have to paint again for a very long time.
Check the Weather Report
You would be amazed at the people who paint houses in drizzly or steamy weather. Sure, you might think rushing to get through the job is a good thing, but such weather will only bring about paint peeling, bubbles, and cracking -which means you’re just going to have to do the whole thing over again. Instead, wait for dry weather and only apply paint to a dry surface.
Not Reading the Instructions
This is true in any project, but especially in painting. Does the paint you picked out require a special primer? Are you sure that you know how to operate that paint sprayer? Do you even need a paint sprayer? In every step that you take when painting, always stop to ensure that you’re doing it correctly. Using the wrong primer or improper tools will only reflect badly on the finished product.
Test the Paint
Obviously, this is true with interior painting as well, but is incredibly important in regard to exterior painting as this it is the first thing everyone will see when they look at your house. Take a few different samples of paint and apply them to the outside of your home. After they dry you can get a real glimpse of what the finished product will look like. This was impractical before, having to buy entire cans of paint just for a simple test, but now many paint companies offer smaller, less expensive containers of their paint for just this reason. Now there’s no excuse to not make your home look its best!…
